VFSS Program Services

New Mexico VFSS has been a huge help to both me and my family as I readjust to civilian life. I can't say enough good things about the program and the VFSS staff who I've worked with.

Comprehensive Case Management

Our case managers are charged with providing veterans and their family members with comprehensive case managers. They will take the time to listen to your needs and help you craft an approach to satisfy them. While listening to you, they will identify systemic or underlying issues and suggest ways to alleviate those as well. Your case manager will develop a plan to assist you in accomplishing your goals, and actively support your well being. Case Management interviews are available at the VFSS facilities or in the community, depending on the needs of the client.

Behavioral Health Counseling and Skills Training

The behavioral health specialists assigned to the program include a psychologist and licensed therapists with experience in the military or extensive experience assisting military members and families. The team's therapists provide individual, couple, and family treatment for those suffering from, or adjusting to separation, deployment, reintegration, or the varied issues that derive from and complicate complete adjustment to military stress. In addition to post-traumatic stress and other anxiety issues, our therapists help people suffering from anger, alcohol and substance abuse, domestic violence, depression, and other issues.

Psychiatric and Medication Management

The team has a consulting psychiatrist available to conduct psychiatric assessments as well as prescribe and manage behavioral health medications. Psychiatric interviews can be conducted via telemedicine links with PMS sites around the state, so it isn't necessary that clients always make the trip to Rio Rancho from more rural areas of the state.

Traditional Healing

The team includes a curandera with military experience and has developed referral networks with traditional healing providers. Native American veterans and family members that desire traditional approaches to reintegration and healing can find support and resources from the VFSS team.

Telemedicine

Some direct services can be provided at greater distances through the PMS telemedicine network. If a veteran or family member can't make the trip to a VFSS site, case management, therapeutic, and psychiatric interviews can be conducted through the telemedicine network.
